Certainly not a deep list of Wide Receivers in 2020, but the list still includes some big names. With one of the deepest WR classes in the draft, the more veterans that move, the clearer the picture gets of who will be drafting a WR (or 2) in April.
AJ Green
Exactly what is it like to not work for a year and get paid $15 million? Don’t ask me, ask AJ Green, who didn’t play during the 2019 season. There are a lot of questions surrounding Green right now. How hurt is he? Was he simply disgruntled with the Cincinnati organization? Will he be ready to go at the start of the 2020 season? Will he be back in a Bengals uniform? Does he not agree with two teams in Ohio wearing orange? Health will dictate where he is next year and to what capacity, but no one knows his health better than the Bengals right now. There has been talk of a franchise tag, and Green has said he is open to it. Those questions may keep him from getting a big deal somewhere else, so a Bengals WR attack of Green, Boyd, Ross, and maybe a rookie draft pick could be a great start for Joe Burrow. So, you’re saying there’s a chance!
Amari Cooper
I mentioned Cooper when I spent time talking about Prescott in our QB Free Agent article. Cooper finished the season with 79 catches for 1,189 yards and 8 TDs. These numbers certainly are decent. But when you play for Dallas and you’re the WR1, more is expected. Right, Dez? He had three games of 1 or fewer catches and those kinds of games are not acceptable for the Cowboys. Dallas has $77 million in cap space, but after the big deal given to Zeke and the expected deal to Dak, do they really want to tie up another $19+ million for Cooper too? Especially when this team has quite a few other needs to address. Resigning him means it will be difficult to resign other UFAs at DE and CB. But hey, this is Dallas and Jerry Jones does what he thinks is right.
Emmanuel Sanders
On October 22nd, Denver sent Sanders to San Francisco for a 3rd and 4th round pick. Sanders didn’t exactly light it up for the 49ers, but had some big games, like the 7-112 and 1 TD versus the Cardinals in Week9 and the 7-157 and 1 TD versus the Saints in Week 14. San Francisco is looking to draft a WR to compliment Deebo Samuel, and despite his amazing comeback from a horrible achilles injury, Sanders is 33. That along with his $10 million market value hurts his chances of returning to the Super Bowl participating (and possibly winning) 49ers. He could be a great WR3 in Tampa Bay, Indy, Buffalo or Miami.
Breshad Perriman
Perriman made his papa proud by filling in magnificently when injuries hit Tampa’s stud WRs in Evans and Godwin at the end of the season. He showed he was more than just a 9-route kind of guy with three straight 100+ yard games and 4 TDs. That performance may have vaulted him into a WR2 status for a team out there in need of one. Perriman made $4 million last year, but could be looking at a deal north of $10 million from a team like Washington, Miami, or one of the New York teams.
Robbie Anderson
In 2019, the NY Jets needed Anderson to be a WR1, but that’s not the kind of wide receiver he is. Anderson is one of those wide receivers that fills a very specific role in an offense. He’s not the best short route runner, but he can take the top off of a defense. After all, he did run a 4.36 40 in college (less than 4 years ago). This is important to teams and honestly, the Jets would be smart to resign him. New York will be drafting Jeudy or Lamb in the 2020 NFL Draft, but like I said, Anderson fills a role. That said, the Jets and smart decisions is kind of an oxymoron, so I don’t see him in New York in 2020. Could you imagine him as WR3 running seam routes from the slot on a team like the Broncos, Chargers, or Titans?
Geronimo Allison
Remember during the pre-season of 2019 when Green Bay was hyping not one, but two sleeper wideouts? Once the season began, however, Allison had no more than four catches in a game, and that only happened twice this past season. He finished with 34 catches for 287 yards and 2 TDs. In comparison, Lazard with three less targets finished with 35 catches, 477 yards and 3 TDs. Allison went from boom to bust about as quickly as one yelling Geronimo when skydiving. Irony? Just the fact that Rodgers has an uncanny ability to make wide receivers better (ie Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Randall Cobb, James Jones, Allen Lazard), he wasn’t able to do it with Allison. Pretty sure that’s not due to Rodgers. Green Bay is ready to move on. Lazard is promising with Adams already their WR1, and many draft analysts speculate they will pick a WR early this April. At this point, he will need to be given a chance to be anything more than a WR4 for another team.
Other Notables
Nelson Agholor faded once again in Philly and it’s time to cut ties. Maybe a different system would be beneficial for him, but returning to an Eagles uniform is highly unlikely. Danny Amendola’s most impressive fact is that his middle name is Krugman. Why hasn’t this caught on? Detriot should resign him and market the Krug-Man and as long as the concussions can stay away. In an offense where wide receivers were needed, Phillip Dorsett struggled for playing time in New England. Proof that a 4.33 40 at the combine will only get you so far. Devin Funchess made $10 million last year with the Colts. I hope he saved.
